Coin Article Of The Week

The secret to selecting the best U.S. coins is to look for one well struck with 'full details' By Q. David Bowers

This gem 1923-S half dollar was certified as MS-65. All ever seen by the author are lightly struck in areas, especially the center of the obverse. If you can find one with “Full Details,” likely it would cost no more!

I find it very interesting to watch the marketplace, but I have never been able to figure out the pricing structure on Standing Liberty quarter dollars minted from 1916 to 1930.

Some years ago an innovative person, identity either forgotten or not known to me in the first place, came up with the term “full head” to describe coins said to be of exceptional value — sometimes multiples of the price of an ordinary strike. As to Full Head sharpness, the Philadelphia Mint 1917 Standing Liberty, Bare Breast quarter dollar nearly always comes this way. In contrast, the 1926-D quarter’s head is usually softly struck.

Illogically, many if not most quarter dollars certified as having full head status have weak rivets in the shield. In other words, another area of the coin is weakly struck. To my knowledge, no one has ever assembled even 50 percent of the coins in the series with full, sharp details on both the head and rivets.

Winged Liberty Head (“Mercury”) dimes are said to be much more valuable if they have full bands on the fasces on the reverse. The 1921 dime, for example, is often seen with full bands, but with the last two digits in the date weak.

Now to the secret: Except for a few 20th century series, most coins do not yet have “tags.”

Indian Head 5-cent coins (Buffalo nickels) thus far have not had a popular tag assigned to them.

In previous installments of this column I have suggested the term “Full Details” to describe such a 5-cent coin for which all features are sharp. The typical 1926-D 5-cent coin is usually flatly struck on the reverse and would flunk. However, perhaps 5 percent of the 1926-D 5-cent coins are sharp. The secret is that if you are patient you can buy one for little or no premium over a weakly struck example!

Many Seated Liberty coins have weak star centers, many Barber half dollars are weak at the upper and lower left of the reverse. I have never seen a sharp 1923-S Walking Liberty half dollar, but if one exists it would likely not sell for a premium!

Some Morgan dollars are easy to find with Full Details — many of the Carson City and New Orleans Mint coins, for example. In contrast, many New Orleans Mint coins are weak at the reverse center. Find a sharp one and you pay no more!

As I see it, there are lots of opportunities to study fields that do not have tags for sharpness, and with patience buy Full Details rarities while no one else is looking! If tags are invented in the future, the value of certain of your coins will multiply!

2015 March of Dimes Silver Dollar Designs Recommended

The Commission of Fine Arts (CFA) and Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee (CCAC) have recommended designs for the commemorative March of Dimes Silver Dollar.

2015 March of Dimes Silver Dollar Designs/ Shown are some of the 2015 March of Dimes Silver Dollar design candidates. Images of all 40 designs are below, to include those recommended by the CFA and CCAC.
In 2015, the United States Mint will strike and sell up to 500,000 silver dollars in collector proof and uncirculated qualities to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the March of Dimes Foundation. The coins are authorized by the March of Dimes Commemorative Coin Act, Public Law 112-209, which passed Congress and was signed into law by President Obama on Dec. 18, 2012.

Established on Jan. 3, 1938 by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, the then named National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis was created to combat the polio epidemic. Now called the March of Dimes in remembrance of public fund-raising campaigns to contribute dimes for support, the foundation’s mission has refocused as it works to reduce the incidence of preterm birth, infant mortality, birth defects, and lifelong disabilities and disorders.

US Mint Sales: Silver Eagles, Baseball Halves Most Sought Coins

by Mike Unser on April 23, 2014 ·

2014 Proof Silver Eagle and 2014 Proof National Baseball HOF Half-Dollar

The 2014 Proof Silver Eagle and 2014 Proof National Baseball HOF Half-Dollar scored the highest weekly sales

Along with 50c National Baseball Hall of Fame Commemorative Coins, staple and annually issued U.S. Mint products bubbled to top positions in the latest sales report.

There’s no shock at seeing proof Silver Eagles and core Proof Sets floating high weeks to months past their launch, but it’s rare for clad halves to mingle amongst the popular crowd. It only took the Mint’s first curved 50-cent piece to make it happen.

Next week’s sales report is likely to look like this one given the lack of U.S. Mint product releases between April 11 and April 28. And with the gold and now silver National Baseball Hall of Fame Commemorative Coins officially sold out, the clad baseball halves are in focus — more so since their introductory pricing ends on Monday.

In wrapping up, this week the U.S. Mint provided sales updates to 228 numismatic products. Of those with a sales history of at least two weeks, 22 outperformed their prior weekly sales compared to 78 in the previous sales report.

Below are tables showing the latest sales for U.S. Mint numismatic products. The sales period covers April 14, 2014 to April 20, 2014. Products with an asterisk (*) are no longer available.
